Scanderbeg, c.1404-1468, Albanian national hero. The son of an Albanian prince, he was born George Castriota. He abjured Islam in 1443, styled himself prince of Albania, and devoted the rest of his life to defending Albania against Turkish invasion, on occasion allying himself with Venice, Naples, Hungary, and the pope. After his death Albania fell to the Turks.
